Every crossing carries something forward.

The Crossings uses family history as a narrative thread through a larger historical exploration of migration, memory, cultural transmission, faith, language, identity, conquest, settlement, and the movement of peoples across the Mediterranean and Atlantic worlds. The route privileges places where those crossings can be encountered in the landscape itself: Granada and Córdoba in al-Andalus; Palos and La Rábida at the threshold of the Atlantic crossing; Gibraltar and the Strait as passage between continents; Tangier and Chefchaouen as part of the North African afterlife of Iberia; and Testour as a particularly vivid example of Andalusian and Morisco culture carried into North Africa.
